Group Hours:
Blood Drive
I had to miss the actual blood drive due to an interview that was mandatory. Because of this, the week before the blood drive, Mr. Greenlee arranged for me to make phone calls. A list of many past donors was given to me. I never liked talking on the phone because of my voice, but completing these hours made me more comfortable talking on the phone. The hardest part of calling people was trying to convince them to make an appointment to donate blood. My job was pretty easy. I ended up liking talking to the people at the end of the day. Even though I was upset that I didn't get to bond with my classmates during the blood drive, I learned a valuable lesson; donate blood when you get the chance.

Chisholm Trail Clean Up
|
Before we helped outside, I helped Mr. Greenlee carry in all his tea sets for the Great Gatsby tea party. The tea party was held for the juniors, us at the time. I helped set up every table and put decorations up throughout Sugar Sisters. It was interesting to learn the proper was to set up for a tea party. Then, we cleaned the gazebo area and the curb flower beds for the Chisholm Trail Festival. I picked many weeds around Heritage Park. After some classmates and I picked weeds, we raked out the old mulch on the curbs of Main. We replaced the old mulch with brand new mulch. I enjoyed the work we did to make our town look good. I did not enjoy the weather though, it was too cold and rainy for me to be outside on a normal day. Working hard throughout the day with my classmates was great, but the best part of the day was eating Red Barn with my classmates. |
Back to School Wellness Night
For these group hours Coach Blosser asked the senior class to help run the Wellness Night. I was stationed in the Big Gym along with some fellow classmates. We chose two game to play, they were Line Tag and Rock, Paper, Scissors Hula Hoop. We split the kids into two groups. Half way through are time we would switch the groups so the kids could participate in both games. Playing with the kids was something I really liked. I learned how exciting this night is for the kids, and how much they enjoy playing with us older kids. I definitely want to be around little kids and will probably keep donating my time in the Elementary until I graduate, even if it makes me really tired.

Individual Hours:
Recreational Soccer
|
For my first individual hours I helped coach 3rd-4th grade soccer players. I became aware of this when Katie Jo Schmidt contacted me about helping her. I made arrangements to confirm helping with Coach Blosser. Every week I would assist Katie Jo with practice. We would stretch, do drills, and condition at the end. During practice, one thing I did was lead the stretches. I would also set up cones for any drills that we would do that evening. Introducing and demonstrating new skills each practice was something I enjoyed. The kids always wanted to learn and have fun, and introducing new kills was a way great to do that. I enjoyed being involved during practice, so I would participate in drills and scrimmage with them. Coaching kids in my future is something I would like to do. These hours gave me an insight on what age group I want to coach, and how I would do it.

Summer Blood Drive
I became aware of these hours because my classmate, Lucy, was in charge of it. I talked to Lucy about working and she agreed to let me. Before the blood drive began, I came in early to help set up the tables, set out snacks on the tables, and get everything organized on the greeting table. During the drive I ran the front table with two other people. There we checked in people who had appointments, and donators who were walk-ins. I wrote their names on a sticker then directed them wear to sit. Also, I asked the donators if they had filled out a fast pass. If they hadn't I showed them how to complete the form while they waited. After the blood drive ended, I helped pick up the tables I had set up earlier in the day. This was the biggest blood drive in Caldwell history, so I had many opportunities to work on my customer service. I enjoyed talking to lots of Caldwell citizens and chatting with my classmates who were also at the table. It was great to see how much blood people donated.

Middle School Volleyball Camp
|
Staci Schmidt and Kara Mayo approached me about helping with the Middle School Volleyball camp, since I participate in volleyball. My time spent with the middle school players was very entertaining. Many of these girls I've known since they were babies, so it made me feel old to be teaching them skills on how to become a better volleyball player. During these hours I helped with shagging balls, running drills, and demonstrating new skills, and fine tuning skills they already knew. My favorite part of the whole camp was eating at Pekarna on the very last day. Coaching takes a lot of work, even during the off season. I praise Coach Schmidt and Mayo for putting up with this group of girls because they sure can talk!
